Questions Physiologists Ask

A person who studies how the body works is called a physiologist (pronounced “fizzy-aw-low-jist”). Physiologists are always trying to answer questions about how something works in the body in every day life, what changes when you are sick, and what changes when someone goes into a different environment, such as into space or deep into the ocean.

Physiologists ask questions such as . . .

Blood flows inside your veins…but why does blood coming from a cut finger stop flowing after a while and make a scab?

Why do people have a hard time walking after being sick in bed or out in space for a long time?

How do I remember things that happened to me a long time ago?

Why can cats jump a lot higher than people?

Why do I get goose bumps when I get scared or cold?

Why can a bird fly but I can’t?

If you think these questions are interesting, maybe you’d like to become a physiologist, too! Click here to read more about becoming a physiologist.

If you’d like to try your hand at being a physiologist, here are some experiments for you to try either at home or at school. Click here to see a list of experiments.
