APS Postdoctoral Fellowship Initiative

Request for Applications

APS AWARDEE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TAX RULES

The APS Council has launched this stopgap initiative in response to the diminishing success rate of candidates competing for NIH F32 Fellowship support. In order to assist our members contending with the reduction in available resources from NIH in support of postdoctoral fellowships, the Initiative targets individuals who have narrowly missed NIH funding. This interim initiative is designed to provide our members with the ability to continue the training of future independent physiologists. The goal is to support postdoctoral fellowship candidates who are scheduled to work in the laboratories of members of the American Physiological Society. The Council has committed funds to support up to 10 postdoctoral fellowships as part of this short-term initiative.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Fellowship applicant is an APS member at the time of application and throughout the award period.

  • Postdoctoral mentor has been a member in good standing of The American Physiological Society for at least 3 years immediately prior to application and remains so throughout the award period.

  • Non-funded postdoctoral fellowship application must have received a priority score of 200 or better on which the applicant was the principal investigator.

  • Candidate must be planning to revise and resubmit their fellowship application to NIH or other Federal agency or major foundation.

Terms and Conditions:

  • Applications will be accepted until January 2, 2008. Applications, including host scientist letter, must be received through the application submission site no later than 5:00 pm EST on the deadline date.

  • Award period will begin March 1, 2008.

  • Award announcement will be made in mid-late February for the award period beginning March 1.

  • Awards are for a total of $42,000 consisting of a stipend of $37,000 and $5,000 provided as the Fellow’s institutional allowance for his/her use for health insurance, books, travel, etc. No indirect costs are allowed.

  • If the proposal is subsequently funded by NIH or any other agency, any funds unused at the time the new fellowship grant is awarded are to be returned to the Society on a prorated basis.

  • Awards will be granted based on scientific merit.

  • Only one fellowship application per host laboratory will be awarded.

  • Successful applicants are expected to acknowledge APS support in future publications and present their research results at the APS Annual Meeting held in conjunction with the Experimental Biology Meeting.
