APS AWARDEE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TAX RULES
APS sponsors an American Association for the Advancement of Science
(AAAS) Mass Media Science and Engineering fellow. This individual will spend
a summer working in the newsroom of a newspaper, magazine, or radio or
television station, sharpening his or her ability to communicate complex
scientific issues to nonscientists and helping to improve public
understanding of science.
Candidates must be enrolled as a graduate or postgraduate student of
physiology or a related discipline. Generally, a background in scientific
writing is preferred. It is recommended that applicants be able to
demonstrate, through press clippings of their work, a history of
communicating scientific information to the public.

are presenting their research at the Experimental Biology meeting. To be
considered for the award, the candidate must be enrolled as an undergraduate
student at the time of the application and EB meeting; be the first author
on a submitted abstract for the EB meeting; and be working with an APS
member. The recipients receive $500 and a certificate. The recipient must
attend and present a poster at the meeting. Selection of awardees is based
both on the abstract and letter of application, as well as an oral
presentation of the poster to the David Bruce Award Selection Committee.

This award is designed to support the training of talented students
entering careers in physiology by providing predoctoral fellowships for
underrepresented students (African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans,
Native Alaskans, and Native Pacific Islanders).
The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. or
its territories. The applicant must have been accepted into or currently

The APS Minority Travel Fellowship Award for physiologists from
underrepresented minority groups (African Americans, Hispanics, Native
Americans, Native Alaskans, and Native Pacific Islanders) sponsored by NIDDK
and NIGMS, are open to advanced undergraduate, predoctoral, and postdoctoral
students. Students in the APS Porter Physiology Development Program are
eligible to apply. Minority faculty members at MBRS and MARC-eligible
institutions may also submit applications. The intent of this award is to
increase participation of pre- and postdoctoral minority students in
physiological sciences. The recipient receives funds for travel and a per
diem to attend either the Experimental Biology meeting or one of the APS
Conferences. Each recipient is matched with an APS mentor at the meeting.

APS Postdoctoral Fellowship in Physiological
Genomics

$38,000 second- year stipend with $3,500 trainee allowance

Deadline: January 16
APS AWARDEE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TAX RULES
Formerly known as the APS-Genentech Postdoctoral Fellowship, the APS
Postdoctoral Fellowship in Physiological Genomics has been established in
recognition of the fact that many advances in genomics ultimately require a
functional understanding in the context of the organism, and special
training is needed to conduct this type of research. The ideal candidate is
one who has completed outstanding work in a top-flight graduate program
(e.g., molecular biology, genetics, etc.) and who has the intention of
employing organ system approaches during his/her postdoctoral training.
Alternatively, a well-trained graduate in integrative physiology might wish
to expand his/her work through the use of molecular biological tools and
genomics. A central criterion of the postdoctoral project requires the
scientist to use the tools of cellular and molecular biology in the setting
of the whole animal. [Assays and/or analyses can be performed in
vitro on material harvested from control and experimental animals, but
material cannot solely be harvested and then exposed to the control and
experimental conditions in vitro].
A candidate for this program should identify a laboratory within the
United States and a sponsor who is an APS Member in good standing
under whose supervision a project in organ system physiology and molecular
biology/genomics can be combined. The laboratory host/sponsor must be a
member of the American Physiological Society, and it is anticipated that
award recipients will join the Society. The award funds cover a two-year period
and include an annual stipend for the first year of $36,000, plus a trainee
allowance of $3,500; and a second-year stipend of $38,000, plus a trainee
allowance of $3,500. The award does not include an indirect cost
reimbursement.
Adequate progress must be demonstrated by a written report submitted to
the APS following the first year before a second year stipend and trainee
allowance can be awarded.
Applications will now only be accepted via online
submission. Please go to
http://www.the-aps.org/awardapps to
apply.
