White House
Fellowships for 2006-07
President Lyndon Johnson established the White House Fellows program in
1964 to encourage men and women with deomonstrated leadership potential to
spend a year working in federal government early in their career. Each year,
between 11 and 19 Fellows are selected to serve for one year as full-time,
paid assistants to members of the Cabinet and senior White House staff,
where they observe federal policy making at the highest levels. Fellows also
participate in an education program that includes off-the-record meetings
with leaders from all realms of society and travel opportunities to explore
US domestic and foreign policy in action. After the fellowship year, it is
expected that the Fellows will return to their communities with a better
understanding of the federal government and the policymaking process.
Applications are due February 1, 2006. Applicants must be US
citizens. Applicants should be out of school and working in their chosen
professions. There are no age restrictions, but as a result of the selection
criteria, the average age of Fellows is typically 31-33. Fellowships are
awarded on a strictly non-partisan basis. Employees of the federal
government are not eligible unless they are career military personnel. For
