APS Endorses NAS Report on Random
Source Dogs and Cats |
|
The American Physiological
Society announced
October 29 that it has endorsed the recommendations of a
National Academy of Sciences report calling for the
identification of new suppliers to replace Class B
dealers as providers of random source dogs and cats for
medical research.

Nominations are invited for the Editorship of the American Journal of
Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology to succeed A. Nasjletti, who
will complete his term as Editor on December 31, 2010. The Publications
Committee plans to interview candidates in the Spring of 2010. Applications
should be received before January 15, 2010.

The deadline for abstract submission and applications is

The 2010 application is now available for the tum Suden/Hellebrandt/Horvath
Award for male or female graduate students or postdoctoral
fellows who are 1st author on an abstract
submitted to the Experimental Biology meeting.
NOTE:
trainees must be APS members (either student or regular)
and cannot have received the award previously at
their current educational level.

Promote
Physiology At a Local or Regional Science Fair This School
Year |
The APS sponsors awards at local and regional science fairs
on a first come, first served basis. Any APS member who
participates as a judge in a local or regional science fair
at an elementary, middle, or high school is eligible to
apply and receive APS support. Award package includes an APS
pin, t-shirt, and Certificate of Achievement for the student
with the best physiology project, and a Women Life
Scientists book for the student’s teacher. To request an

will become the next President of Brigham and Women’s
Hospital in Boston, MA. Dr. Nabel has been the NHLBI
Director since 2005.

Porter
Physiology Fellowship Award |
|
Award Amount: $23,500
Application Deadline: January 15, 2010
The goal of the Porter Physiology Development Program is to
encourage diversity among students pursuing full-time
studies toward the Ph.D. (or D.Sc.) in the physiological
sciences and to encourage their participation in the
American Physiological Society; funding provides 1-2 year
full-time graduate fellowships.
The Porter Physiology Fellowship Awards are open to
underrepresented minority applicants who are citizens or
permanent residents of the United States or its
Territories. The applicant must have been accepted into or
is currently in a graduate program in physiology at the time
of the application. The applicant must also be a Student
Member of the APS or have an application in process.

International Early Career
Physiologist Travel
Awards
are presented to graduate students, post-doctoral fellows
and junior faculty members who work outside the United
States. This initiative of the International Physiology
Committee is designed to assist with travel expenses that
international early career
physiologists incur in attending the Experimental
Biology Meeting in order to present their work. Up to 10
awards of $500 each will be made annually.
Applicants must be studying
for a doctoral degree or have
received a doctoral degree within the past 15 year and
be an APS member in good standing.
Each applicant must submit an
abstract to and attend the Experimental Biology meeting. The
abstract must be submitted to a Topic Category of the APS
Section to which the applicant’s research is relevant.

Arthur C. Guyton Educator of the Year Award
|
|
The Award, sponsored by W.
B. Saunders Company (Elsevier) recognizes a full-time
faculty member of an accredited college or university and
member of the APS who has independent evidence of: (1)
excellence in classroom teaching over a number of years at
the undergraduate, graduate, or professional levels; (2)
commitment to the improvement of physiology teaching within
the candidate's own institution; and (3) contributions to
physiology education at the local community, national or
international levels. The awardee is requested to write an
essay on his/her philosophy of education for publication in
The Physiologist.
Each nominee must be
nominated by a member of APS. The nominator should
email a letter of support outlining the qualifications of
the nominee no later than Friday, December 4, 2009

Minority Travel Fellowship Awards – EB 2010 |
|
Application Deadline: November 11, 2009
The APS, with support from NIDDK and NIGMS,
is offering travel awards for underrepresented minorities
(i.e., African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and
Pacific Islanders), conducting research within the 50 States
and U.S. Territories, to attend Experimental Biology 2010 in
Anaheim, CA from April 24-28, 2010.
The awards are open to graduate students,
postdoctoral students, and advanced undergraduate students.
Students who obtained their undergraduate education in
Minority Biomedical Research Programs (MBRS) or Minority
Access to Research Career (MARC)-eligible institutions, as
well as students in the APS Porter Development Program, are
encouraged to apply. Minority faculty members at the above
institutions may also submit applications.
Fellowships awarded are contingent on the
availability of grant funds. Funds will provide
transportation, meals, and lodging. These awards do not
provide funds for international travel. Incomplete
applications will not be reviewed.

Minority Outreach Fellowship |

Application Deadline: December 15, 2009
The APS K-12 Minority Outreach Fellowship seeks to foster
communication between minority graduate and postdoctoral
students and middle/high school minority life sciences
students. Program activities include year-long outreach
fellowships for senior graduate students and postdoctoral
fellows to visit K-12 classrooms, help conduct teacher
professional development workshops, and attend scientific
meetings (i.e. ABRCMS or SACNAS, EB 2010 AND EB 2011).
