Abstract Deadline for EB 2010 is November 4th

Don’t miss the opportunity to present your research at Experimental Biology 2010 scheduled for April 24-28 in Anaheim, CA. When submitting your abstract, be sure to also submit your award applications. Applications are now being accepted for more than $700,000 in 90 award programs offered by the participating societies. Visit the EB website for more details on award deadlines and society criteria.

APS Endorses NAS Report on Random Source Dogs and Cats

The American Physiological Society announced October 29 that it has endorsed the recommendations of a National Academy of Sciences report calling for the identification of new suppliers to replace Class B dealers as providers of random source dogs and cats for medical research.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS - Editorship of American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology

Nominations are invited for the Editorship of the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology to succeed A. Nasjletti, who will complete his term as Editor on December 31, 2010. The Publications Committee plans to interview candidates in the Spring of 2010. Applications should be received before January 15, 2010.

APS Partners With DeepDyve on Innovative Online Rental Service for Research

DeepDyve recently unveiled the world’s largest online rental service for scientific, technical and medical research. From a growing database spanning thousands of journals, DeepDyve now gives consumers and professionals access to more than 30 million articles for as little as $0.99 per article. APS Executive Director quoted.  "The web is transforming the publishing industry and creating opportunities for new users to access our content," said Martin Frank, Ph. D., executive director of the American Physiological Society. "The rental model that DeepDyve has pioneered enables us to serve these new users without compromising the products we offer to our traditional subscription customers."

An Odyssey with Animals: A Veterinarian’s Reflections on the Animal Rights & Welfare Debate

An Odyssey with Animals is an in-depth examination of humans and animals and the contemporary upheaval over animal rights vs. animal welfare. APS member Adrian Morrison offers a thoughtful perspective on a wide range of topics that fall within the scope of this debate. The book was published by Oxford University Press.

Caroline tum Suden/Frances A. Hellebrandt Professional Opportunity Award

The deadline for abstract submission and applications is November 4, 2009

The 2010 application is now available for the tum Suden/Hellebrandt/Horvath Award for male or female graduate students or postdoctoral fellows who are 1st author on an abstract submitted to the Experimental Biology meeting.

NOTE: trainees must be APS members (either student or regular) and cannot have received the award previously at their current educational level.

Promote Physiology At a Local or Regional Science Fair This School Year

The APS sponsors awards at local and regional science fairs on a first come, first served basis. Any APS member who participates as a judge in a local or regional science fair at an elementary, middle, or high school is eligible to apply and receive APS support. Award package includes an APS pin, t-shirt, and Certificate of Achievement for the student with the best physiology project, and a Women Life Scientists book for the student’s teacher. Tennessee Physiological Society Hosts First Meeting

The Tennessee Physiological Society, the newest chapter of the American Physiological Society held its inaugural meeting on October 23 in Nashville, TN.  For more information about the meeting and the chapter click here.

NHLBI Director Elizabeth Nabel Announces Plans to Leave NIH

On January 1, 2010, current Director of NHLBI Elizabeth Nabel will become the next President of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. Dr. Nabel has been the NHLBI Director since 2005.

Fun in Understanding Physiology for More than 8,000 Students

Special thanks to the 40 APS members who are joined by more than 200 physiologist volunteers and 150 teachers across the nation in reaching more than 8,000 precollege students in schools, museums, and career fairs during Physiology Understanding Week!

Porter Physiology Fellowship Award

Award Amount: $23,500
Application Deadline: January 15, 2010

The goal of the Porter Physiology Development Program is to encourage diversity among students pursuing full-time studies toward the Ph.D. (or D.Sc.) in the physiological sciences and to encourage their participation in the American Physiological Society; funding provides 1-2 year full-time graduate fellowships.

The Porter Physiology Fellowship Awards are open to underrepresented minority applicants who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its Territories. The applicant must have been accepted into or is currently in a graduate program in physiology at the time of the application. The applicant must also be a Student Member of the APS or have an application in process.

The APS Physiologists of Industry Committee (PIC) provides two awards each year.  The PIC Postdoctoral and Predoctoral Novel Disease Model Awards recognize the best postdoctoral trainee and the best graduate student abstract submittals describing a disease model at EB 2010.  Click here to view the complete award description, eligibility requirements, and past award winning abstract titles.

International Early Career Physiologist Travel Awards

International Early Career Physiologist Travel Awards are presented to graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and junior faculty members who work outside the United States.  This initiative of the International Physiology Committee is designed to assist with travel expenses that international early career physiologists incur in attending the Experimental Biology Meeting in order to present their work.  Up to 10 awards of $500 each will be made annually. 

Applicants must be studying for a doctoral degree or have received a doctoral degree within the past 15 year and be an APS member in good standing.  Each applicant must submit an abstract to and attend the Experimental Biology meeting. The abstract must be submitted to a Topic Category of the APS Section to which the applicant’s research is relevant.  Additional Information can be obtained by clicking here.

Latin American Initiative Proposals Being Accepted Again – Deadline November 2

If you missed the earlier deadline for proposals to be funded in 2010, consider applying for this latest deadline.  The International Physiology Committee has funds to support additional courses/workshops/symposia that are carried out in Latin American countries with participation of APS members.  For additional information, click here.

The Arthur C. Guyton Educator of the Year Award

The Award, sponsored by W. B. Saunders Company (Elsevier) recognizes a full-time faculty member of an accredited college or university and member of the APS who has independent evidence of: (1) excellence in classroom teaching over a number of years at the undergraduate, graduate, or professional levels; (2) commitment to the improvement of physiology teaching within the candidate's own institution; and (3) contributions to physiology education at the local community, national or international levels. The awardee is requested to write an essay on his/her philosophy of education for publication in The Physiologist.

Each nominee must be nominated by a member of APS. The nominator should email a letter of support outlining the qualifications of the nominee no later than Friday, December 4, 2009 to: Erica A Wehrwein, Chair, Guyton Awards Selection Committee.

APS/NIDDK Minority Travel Fellowship Awards – EB 2010

Application Deadline: November 11, 2009

The APS, with support from NIDDK and NIGMS, is offering travel awards for underrepresented minorities (i.e., African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders), conducting research within the 50 States and U.S. Territories, to attend Experimental Biology 2010 in Anaheim, CA from April 24-28, 2010.

The awards are open to graduate students, postdoctoral students, and advanced undergraduate students. Students who obtained their undergraduate education in Minority Biomedical Research Programs (MBRS) or Minority Access to Research Career (MARC)-eligible institutions, as well as students in the APS Porter Development Program, are encouraged to apply. Minority faculty members at the above institutions may also submit applications.

Fellowships awarded are contingent on the availability of grant funds. Funds will provide transportation, meals, and lodging. These awards do not provide funds for international travel. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

APS/NIDDK K-12 Minority Outreach Fellowship

Application Deadline: December 15, 2009

The APS K-12 Minority Outreach Fellowship seeks to foster communication between minority graduate and postdoctoral students and middle/high school minority life sciences students. Program activities include year-long outreach fellowships for senior graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to visit K-12 classrooms, help conduct teacher professional development workshops, and attend scientific meetings (i.e. ABRCMS or SACNAS, EB 2010 AND EB 2011).
