APS Offering Two Professional Skills Courses in 2010

APS  is offering two professional skills training courses, "Making Scientific Presentations" and "Writing and Reviewing for Scientific Journals" for grad students and postdocs  this winter -  January 14-17th, 2010 at Disney's Contemporary Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. HURRY!  Time is Running Out on the Logo Redesign Contest

Deadline: October 30, 2009

In 2012, the American Physiological Society will celebrate its 125th anniversary.  In preparation for that special occasion, the APS Council is interested in revising its logo. The APS Council invites the APS membership to apply their creative minds to the creation of a new logo that might reflect the Society’s mission statement “integrating the life sciences from molecule to organism”.  The logo will be used in various ways to promote the image of APS and of physiology. The designer of the selected logo will receive $500.

Meet Karlman Wasserman on the Living History Page

The APS is pleased to announce the recent posting of a video interview Karlman Wasserman. APS members are encouraged to consider interviewing senior physiologists at their institution to provide a living history of physiology. The videos provided to date focus on the physiologist's training, careers and their professional interactions. A total of 18 videos have been posted and at least another 6 are in the works.

Woman in Space

In the early years of the “space race” (1957-1975) two men sought to test a scientifically simple yet culturally complicated theory: that women might be innately better suited for space travel than men. One of the men was a Harvard-educated physician, surgeon and aeromedical physiologist. Read more about a new article in Advances.

Caroline tum Suden/Frances A. Hellebrandt Professional Opportunity Award

The deadline for abstract submission and applications is November 4, 2009

The 2010 application is now available for the tum Suden/Hellebrandt/Horvath Award for male or female graduate students or postdoctoral fellows who are 1st author on an abstract submitted to the Experimental Biology meeting.

NOTE: trainees must be APS members (either student or regular) and cannot have received the award previously at their current educational level.

The APS Physiologists of Industry Committee (PIC) provides two awards each year.  The PIC Postdoctoral and Predoctoral Novel Disease Model Awards recognize the best postdoctoral trainee and the best graduate student abstract submittals describing a disease model at EB 2010.  Click here to view the complete award description, eligibility requirements, and past award winning abstract titles.

International Early Career Physiologist Travel Awards

International Early Career Physiologist Travel Awards are presented to graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and junior faculty members who work outside the United States.  This initiative of the International Physiology Committee is designed to assist with travel expenses that international early career physiologists incur in attending the Experimental Biology Meeting in order to present their work.  Up to 10 awards of $500 each will be made annually. 

Applicants must be studying for a doctoral degree or have received a doctoral degree within the past 15 year and be an APS member in good standing.  Each applicant must submit an abstract to and attend the Experimental Biology meeting. The abstract must be submitted to a Topic Category of the APS Section to which the applicant’s research is relevant.  Additional Information can be obtained by clicking here.

All application materials must be submitted online by November 13, 2009.

Latin American Initiative Proposals Being Accepted Again – Deadline November 2

If you missed the earlier deadline for proposals to be funded in 2010, consider applying for this latest deadline.  The International Physiology Committee has funds to support additional courses/workshops/symposia that are carried out in Latin American countries with participation of APS members.  For additional information, click here.

The Arthur C. Guyton Educator of the Year Award

The Award, sponsored by W. B. Saunders Company (Elsevier) recognizes a full-time faculty member of an accredited college or university and member of the APS who has independent evidence of: (1) excellence in classroom teaching over a number of years at the undergraduate, graduate, or professional levels; (2) commitment to the improvement of physiology teaching within the candidate's own institution; and (3) contributions to physiology education at the local community, national or international levels. The awardee is requested to write an essay on his/her philosophy of education for publication in The Physiologist.

Each nominee must be nominated by a member of APS. The nominator should email a letter of support outlining the qualifications of the nominee no later than Friday, December 4, 2009 to: Erica A Wehrwein, Chair, Guyton Awards Selection Committee.

Reynolds Award–Best History of Physiology Article–Deadline December 1

The Orr E. Reynolds Award, named for the second Executive Secretary-Treasurer, is presented for the best historical article submitted by a member of the Society. Articles may deal with any aspect of the history of physiology, including the development of physiological ideas and their application, instrumentation, individual and collective biography, departmental and institutional history, history of societies including APS, and physiology in its public context. Manuscripts should represent original research and be adequately documented. Articles published in journals or books of the Society during the prior calendar year are also eligible for the award upon request by the author. The recipient receives $500 and reimbursement of expenses, up to $1,500, incurred while attending the Experimental Biology meeting. The article may be published in one of the Society journals after appropriate peer review. Members may receive the award only once, and those members who have advanced degrees in the history of science or medicine are not eligible.

APS/NIDDK Minority Travel Fellowship Awards – EB 2010

Application Deadline: November 11, 2009

The APS, with support from NIDDK and NIGMS, is offering travel awards for underrepresented minorities (i.e., African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders), conducting research within the 50 States and U.S. Territories, to attend Experimental Biology 2010 in Anaheim, CA from April 24-28, 2010.

The awards are open to graduate students, postdoctoral students, and advanced undergraduate students. Students who obtained their undergraduate education in Minority Biomedical Research Programs (MBRS) or Minority Access to Research Career (MARC)-eligible institutions, as well as students in the APS Porter Development Program, are encouraged to apply. Minority faculty members at the above institutions may also submit applications.

Fellowships awarded are contingent on the availability of grant funds. Funds will provide transportation, meals, and lodging. These awards do not provide funds for international travel. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

APS/NIDDK K-12 Minority Outreach Fellowship

Application Deadline: December 15, 2009

The APS K-12 Minority Outreach Fellowship seeks to foster communication between minority graduate and postdoctoral students and middle/high school minority life sciences students. Program activities include year-long outreach fellowships for senior graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to visit K-12 classrooms, help conduct teacher professional development workshops, and attend scientific meetings (i.e. ABRCMS or SACNAS, EB 2010 AND EB 2011).

Promote Physiology At a Local or Regional Science Fair This School Year

The APS sponsors awards at local and regional science fairs on a first come, first served basis. Any APS member who participates as a judge in a local or regional science fair at an elementary, middle, or high school is eligible to apply and receive APS support. Award package includes an APS pin, t-shirt, and Certificate of Achievement for the student with the best physiology project, and a Women Life Scientists book for the student’s teacher.
