Have You Ever Wondered Why Your Proposal
Wasn’t Funded – GAO Answers |
|
A new
General Accountability Office report
considers the use of discretion by NIH institute and center
directors "to fund applications based on factors in addition to
scientific merit, 'skipping' over applications with higher
scores or making 'exceptions' to fund applications with lower
scores. GAO found that in fiscal year 2007, IC directors funded
about 19 percent of NIH’s applications for a common type of
grant based on factors in addition to scientific merit."
According to the report, "IC officials cited the NIH-wide
initiative to fund new investigators as one of the most frequent
reasons for making the exceptions." The GAO calls for additional
internal controls to monitor the use of exceptions.

Book Your Housing for EB Now: Why
Booking in the EB Block is Best |
|
Going to EB 2010? We
strongly encourage you to make your reservations via the
Official EB 2010 Housing Bureau.
We recognize that you have many options with area hotels and
often room rate is your sole decision maker. However, it is
important to understand the implications of booking outside
the EB block. Are you aware of the many additional amenities
hotels within the EB block provide? Want free breakfast?
Free shuttle service to the Convention Center? Free wireless
internet? Many of the EB-block hotels offer
exclusive discounts and amenities
that you will only receive when booking through the
Official EB 2010 Housing Bureau.
Staying in the block keeps registration and housing rates
low for everyone!
Be very cautious of giving
your credit card information to hotels outside the EB Block.
EB Management will have no recourse on your behalf should
you have problems with your reservation. Be suspicious of
companies contacting you claiming to be affiliated with EB!
ONLY the hotels booked through the
Official EB 2010 Housing Bureau
provide housing registration on behalf of EB!
See you
in Anaheim!

On Being A Scientist - a New Video from the
National Academies |
|
The scientific research enterprise is built on a foundation
of trust.
Scientists trust that the results reported by others are
valid. Society trusts that the results of research reflect
an honest attempt by scientists to describe the world
accurately and without bias. But this trust will endure only
if the scientific community devotes itself to exemplifying
and transmitting the values associated with ethical
scientific conduct.
This video is based on
third edition of On Being a Scientist and
reflects developments since the publication of the original
edition in 1989 and a second edition in 1995.
