Action Alert: Act Now to Protect
Peer-Reviewed Research! Oppose Increase in SBIR Set-Aside |
|
Congress is considering a bill that
could reduce funding for many types of research. We are
asking you to contact your representatives to oppose an
increase in the SBIR set-aside. Right now, Members of the
House and Senate and their staff are working on legislation
to reauthorize the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)
Program, which provides an exclusive pool of money to fund
research conducted by small business by "setting aside" 2.5%
of the budget of 11 federal research agencies including NIH
and NSF. Although the House supports a bill that leaves the
SBIR allocation at the current 2.5% level, the Senate
version of the SBIR reauthorization bill would increase the
allocation to fund the SBIR program to 3.5% (a net increase
of 40%!). Such an increase would redirect $1 billion dollars
in research funding away from applicants in all other
settings.
ACT NOW! Tell your representatives to reauthorize SBIR
without any increase in the
set-aside.

Listen to Life Lines Episode 23: Cool
Water |
|
Must we drink 64 ounces of
water each day -- exclusive of food and other beverages --
to stay properly hydrated? If not, how much water do we
need? Those are the questions addressed by three
physiologists in this month’s edition of Life Lines,
the podcast of The American Physiological Society.

Heinz Valtin of
Dartmouth Medical School (retired), Mark Knepper of
the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute and Samuel
Cheuvront, of the U.S. Army Research Institute of
Environmental Medicine will also tell us why it can be
dangerous to drink too much, particularly when we are under
stress. Give this show a listen, and then let the outdoor
summer fun begin!

NSF Releases
Report on Graduate Enrollments |
|
The National Science Foundation recently released the
InfoBrief, "S & E Graduate Enrollments Accelerate in 2007;
Enrollments of Foreign Students Reach New High". The brief
analyzes data from the Survey of Graduate Students and
Postdoctorates in Science and Engineering (2007). The data
show that enrollment in U.S. science and engineering (S&E)
graduate programs in 2007 grew 3.3% over comparable data for
2006-the highest year-over-year increase since 2002 and
nearly double the 1.7% increase seen in 2006.
