Latin American Initiative Award Program – Deadline June 30th

With the aim of strengthening the ties between APS, sister Physiological Societies in Latin America, and physiologists working in the Americas, APS established The Latin American Initiative. Each year, the initiative supports 4 courses/workshops/symposia that are carried out in Latin American countries with participation of APS members. The budget for each course/workshop/symposium is $5,000, which will be provided in the form of reimbursement upon receipt of a final report on the event.

The deadline for applications is June 30 for funding in 2010. Applications must be submitted online at www.the-aps.org/awardapps.

Questions concerning the Latin American Initiative (www.the-aps.org/awards/society/latin.htm) should be addressed to the Chair of the International Physiology Committee, Ida Llewellyn-Smith (Tel: 61-8-8204-4456; email: ida.llewellyn-smith@flinders.edu.au) or to the APS Executive Director Martin Frank (Tel: 301-634-7118; email: mfrank@the-aps.org).

NSF Data on Doctorates to Underrepresented Minorities

NSFs Science Resources Statistics Division established a new web site (http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/srvydoctorates/sedreporting/start.cfm) that provides information on its progress toward improving the release of doctorate recipient data of underrepresented minorities as part of the annual Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED). Concerns arose in the past over the suppression of data disaggregated by race/ethnicity/sex that, although critical for programs and policies to promote underrepresented minorities, could reveal personal information of the surveyed individuals due to the small sample size. Current plans, however, now will release the data while protecting confidentiality.

The Scientist 2009 Survey of Salaries in the Life Sciences Closes on Sunday, May 31

The Scientist, Magazine of the Life Sciences, in cooperation with several major professional societies including the American Physiological Society, is conducting a survey of compensation in the life sciences.  The survey (http://www.scisurveys.com/) is open to all life scientists employed in the US.

The survey is being conducted and analyzed by AMG Science Publishing, an independent consulting firm. Articles describing the results of the survey will be published in The Scientist September 2009 issue, on The Scientist web site (http://www.the-scientist.com/), and in the participating societies' publications.

Your participation in this study is completely voluntary and will take approximately 4 minutes. To ensure that we collect accurate and representative results please answer all questions carefully and completely. All responses are confidential, anonymous and coded, and data from this research will be reported only in the aggregate.

As our way of saying "thank you" for your participation, all respondents who fill out the survey (http://www.scisurveys.com/) by SUNDAY, MAY 31, 2009 may enter a drawing for one of three Amazon.com gift certificates worth $100.

CTSciNET, the Clinical and Translational Science Network Launched

AAMC has partnered with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Science Careers, and several other organizations, to launch CTSciNET, the Clinical and Translational Science Network. CTSciNet is a content-and-community Web site with the mission of assisting clinicians interested in research, MD-PhD trainees and recipients, PhD-track scientists who want to work closer to the clinic, and anyone considering these career paths. The project is supported by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. Dr. Kerry O'Banion, Chair-Elect of GREAT's MD-PhD Section, is a CTSCiNet Advisor.

An inaugural posting on CTSciNET, "Perspective: Traversing the Bridge Years--Advice for Future Physician-Scientists," is authored by Dr. Lawrence "Skip" Brass, associate dean and director of Penn's Combined Degree and Physician Scholar Programs, and former chair of the AAMC GREAT Group's M.D.-Ph.D. Section.

APS Endorses “One Health Initiative”

After reviewing the mission statement of the One Health Initiative, the APS Council endorsed the Initiatives strategy of improving the lives of all species—human and animal—through the integration of human medicine and veterinary medicine The strategy of the One Health Initiative was viewed as consistent with the Society’s vision of the role of physiology in global health as detailed by APS Past-President Hannah V. Carey in an article that appeared in The Physiologist, the Society’s newsletter.

www.the-aps.org/publications/tphys/2007html/April/apspresident.htm

As stated on the web site, the One Health Initiative (http://www.onehealthinitiative.com/) represents the collaborative effort of multiple disciplines working locally, nationally, and globally to attain optimal health for people, animals, plants and our environment.

Life Lines – Episode 21 – Blood Pressure and the Brain

Did you know that there is a sensor in the nerve endings in the carotid artery that rapidly lowers blood pressure when stimulated? This discovery may one day allow people who are hypertensive to lower their blood pressure by using a pacemaker-like device that stimulates the nerve endings in the blood vessels.
