Gastrointestinal and Liver Section Newsletter
Fall 2003
SECTION ANNOUNCEMENTS
ELECTIONS
The GI/Liver Section would like to extend our sincere
appreciation to our outgoing members Meena Rao and Nigel Bunnett. They both
have done a great job during their tenure on the committee. Linda Samuelson
has agreed to remain on the committee as our representative to the Committee
on Committees. I am also pleased to announce that Deborah Rubin (Washington
University School of Medicine) and Jack Grider (Medical College of Virginia)
were elected by section members to serve as new councilors on our Section
Steering Committee.
Helen Raybould Elected to the APS Council!
The Section received some great news this Spring with
the announcement that our past Chair of the Section, Helen Raybould was
elected to the APS Council. Helen has done an outstanding job with the
Gastrointestinal/Liver Section over the years and we are all very proud of
her accomplishments.
New
Editorial Team at work on American Journal of Physiology: Gastrointestinal
and Liver Physiology
The outgoing editorial
team led by editor-in-chief Marty Kagnoff has developed our journal to
greater strengths and speed of review over the past 6 years. We thank Marty
Kagnoff, and Associate Editors Mark Czaja, Paul Kubes, and Chung Owyang for
their long, capable, and dedicated service to the journal and section. As of
July 1, Marshall (Chip) Montrose assumed the editorship of the journal.
Helen Raybould graciously agreed to continue as Associate Editor, and an
expanded group of new Associate Editors join her: Matt Grisham, Gail Hecht,
Shelly Lu, Karnam Murthy, Patrick Tso, Tim Wang, and Allan Wolkoff. Look for
the January 2004 issue of AJP:GI and Liver, which will introduce the new
team, and outline their goals for the Journal in the coming years.
From the APS Liaison With
Industry Committee (LWIC)
(Section representative: Pam Hornby)
The LWIC is sponsoring a Workshop entitled
"High Content Biology: Multiplexing in Cell Physiology" at EB2004 on Monday,
April 19 from 3:15-5:15 pm. This workshop will describe novel methods for
simultaneous analysis of multiple endpoints in cells and biochemically. The
topics of cell signaling, protein translocation, protein phosphorylation
cascade, GPCR signaling as well as genomic mutational analysis will be
covered. Look for the full program in the Spring Newsletter.
The Novel Disease Model Award will be
granted to a graduate student and a postdoctoral fellow who submit the best
abstracts at EB2004 that describe a novel disease model. The model can be
in vitro or in vivo but should clearly emphasize the potential utility of
the system for future research related to a disease. The award is $500 for
the graduate student and $800 for the postdoctoral fellow and is sponsored
by the LWIC. See the call for abstracts this Fall for application details
and in the Spring newsletter.
You're invited! Come meet and eat with
your fellow physiologists who are working in the corporate sector. The 4th
Annual Liaison With Industry Committee Mixer is on at EB2004. Look for
details in the Spring newsletter.
