NIH defines Early Stage Investigators

The NIH has modified their new investigator policy to define Early Stage Investigators (ESIs) as researchers who earned their terminal research degrees or completed their medical residencies within the last ten years and who have not been a principal investigator on a major research award such as an R01. Starting in February, 2009, applications from ESIs will be identified as such and the career stage will be considered at the time of review.

Senate rejects stimulus package, passes Continuing Resolution

On Friday, September 26, the Senate briefly considered an economic recovery bill that would have provided the NIH with an additional $1.2 billion in funding. Despite rapid mobilization by the advocacy community, the measure was defeated 52-42. However, the Senate was able to pass a continuing resolution that will fund the federal government, including the NIH and NSF, at FY 2008 levels until March 2009.
