APS Advice to NIH Transition Team
APS has participated in making recommendations to President-elect Obama’s transition team for the NIH:
- APS submitted a statement to the NIH transition team urging the new Administration to support and protect those engaged in research involving animal models of disease. APS also recommended that NIH retain policies that continue to offer a measured approach to Public Access.
- APS co-signed a letter from the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research Funding that recommended increasing the NIH budget to stimulate the economy. The letter also called upon the new President to appoint an NIH Director who understands the breadth and complexity of the NIH’s mission.
- APS co-signed a letter asking the new Administration to ensure that NIH’s Public Access Policies provide copyright protection for scientific, technical, and medical journals.
- FASEB provided a statement to the transition team calling for a restoration of sustainable funding levels, an emphasis on investigator-initiated research, and ensuring appropriate professional development opportunities for the next generation of American scientists. (APS is a founding member of FASEB.)
