The Carl J. Wiggers Award ($1,000 honorarium plus complimentary registration to the EB 2011 Meeting) is presented to a scientist who is a fellow of the Cardiovascular Section of APS, who has made outstanding and lasting contributions throughout his/her career to cardiovascular research. This award is in honor of the Cardiovascular Section's Founder, Carl J. Wiggers, whose research defined fundamental pressure-flow relationships in the cardiovascular system. In addition to publishing definitive texts on circulatory physiology, Dr. Wiggers founded Circulation Research and trained numerous future department heads as well as several presidents of APS.

The Nominations package should consist of:

1) a letter of nomination; 2) one or more seconding letters (preferably from someone outside the nominee's institution); and, 3) the candidate's CV.

All application materials must be submitted by February 1, 2010 to be considered for the 2011 award.

This award is in honor of one of the most distinguished members of the Cardiovascular Section: Robert M. Berne.

Applicants must upload: 1) a letter of nomination; 2) one or more seconding letters (preferably individuals outside of the nominee's institution); and, 3) the candidate's curriculum vitae.

All application materials must be submitted by February 1, 2010 to be considered for the 2011 award.

The Cardiovascular Section New Investigator Award ($1,000 plus reimbursement of the advance registration fee) recognizes outstanding investigators in the early stages of their career who have made meritorious contributions to the scientific areas represented by the Cardiovascular Section of the APS. Candidates must be an APS member in good standing with a primary affiliation in the Cardiovascular Section and should not be above the rank of Assistant Professor or a comparable position in a research track at an academic institution or in industry.

The candidate must upload their curriculum vitae, a list of the 3 publications (but not their reprints) that best represent their own new area of investigation along with a ~500-word summary of this work, two nomination letters from regular APS members, and a first- or senior-authored abstract from their laboratory that will be presented at EB 2010.

Candidates will be judged on their new development(s), how their new area of investigation relates to the Cardiovascular Section, and evidence of their independence and promise (funding, peer review activities, etc.). The awardee is expected to attend the 2010 Experimental Biology meeting.

All application materials must be submitted by November 11, 2009.
