History of Physiology Group

In 1983, John B. West discussed the idea of organizing a History Interest Section with A. Clifford Barger, Ralph H. Kellogg, Daniel L. Gilbert, and Louise H. Marshall. The organization meeting was held at the spring 1984 FASEB meeting in St. Louis, MO. The first officers elected were:

President - John B. West
Secretary - Toby A. Appel
Program Advisory Committee (PAC) representative - Norman C. Staub

In 1987 the History of Physiology Section was redesignated the History of Physiology Group because it did not meet the requirement of 100 members. The purpose of this group is to foster interest in and study of all aspects of the history of physiology and to advise Council on matters of interest in these areas. It has representation on the Program Advisory Committee to assist in organizing and presenting scientific sessions, symposia, and other programs of interest to physiologists. The History of Physiology Group is charged with the responsibility of constituting a committee to select the Orr E. Reynolds Award recipient.
